9th (2014)

Always October, Always Brown

There will not be a prolific spraying of written word this year. Surprisingly enough, I find myself limited in time, and do not want to invest any more energy than I need to, as I have already spent more than enough as is, with the videos, pics, and actual managing of tournament.

That said, let me inform the reader that the 9th Classic went down without a hiccup this year (well, that is, if you don't include Phil's concussion). I could not have asked for a better group of guys. Lots of drinking and shanking all around. Winners were Johnny O and Johnny Heebs for the brown jacket and the BMA respectively.

I think it is fair to say that we are now firmly entrenched in the J-R Era of the October Classic. 55% of all Classics have been won by only two men: Johnny O and Ryan Porter. I've been thinking about this, and have tried to figure out exactly what is going on here. What I know for a fact is this; the format of the game allows anyone to be in it for the most part. However, I think this is more true for the first round as to opposed to the brown round. In the shortened brown round, the last 2 holes are really what matter most. So, I'm guessing, the better golfers basically only have to hunker down, and focus on winning those two. Easier said then done? Not quite. If you are a very good golfer, and you are playing with mostly hacks, committing to winning one or two specific holes isn't that difficult (as opposed to winning a group of holes in the first round). My hunch on what is going here? Johnny and Ryan are guilty of being killer clutch when it matters most. Ways to remedy this for next year? Maybe 1-2 stroke handicap on ALL holes, or else change the format of the brown round so that hole 13 is one skin, holes 14-17 are 2 skins, and only the last hole is worth 3 skins. That way, it spreads the skin out a bit more, so more guys can get a piece of the action (a more unfortunate arrangement of words has never been written).

Before I finish this up, I do want to make mention of the this year's inaugural brown supper. At 7 guests, it was a moderate success. Unfortunately, a lot of people were out of town that night (stupid botanical gardens!), so we didn't get the group size I had been looking for. Though, it did leave me with a good feeling of promise for next year. The people who were there had a lot of laughs, and ate some pretty good food. During past brown suppers, while it has always been fun with just the Octobermen, it always left me feeling like the experience should be shared with all. That it had so much more potential if ALL the guys and the wives were included. Half the reason I opened up the doors this year, was to include the wives. The other half? Well, I find that when we all play as a group on Saturday, we don't really get to mingle, because we are all in our own respective groups. And by the time we do get to hang out at the very end, well, we're all too blitzed to remember much the following day. I think the opportunity for laughing will be unparalleled if we can get all the people together at Home of the Pizza House, the night before. Keep it in mind for next year! And if you can come, bring your best brown!

Notes & Quotes

-Considering that the 18th hole has determined the last 4 out of 5 Octobermen, I hereby dub the last hole as either the "Brown Alley" or else the "Brown Hole". Regardless of what it's called, know that this last hole, is where the dreams of men go to live or die. Treat is with respect.

-Mitch entered his first brown round this year, and he did it in glorious walk-off fashion on the last hole of the first round. It was worth a total of 16 skins, with Don Bouchard being the only other guy in the group that had any skins at all (10). I was on my way to win this hole by using my mulligan at the most opportune time (and in turn, punch my ticket to my first ever brown round), but then Mitch ruined my day/year. Basically, I was going to need only an easy par to win with Mitch was looking at a bogey at best. But he then holed in his mother fuckin' chip-in, and nailed a birdie. He proverbially snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

-"Yes, I'd like to order 3 cheese burgers please"

John Hebert left this message on the voicemail of the of the insurance company, whose number was posted on the back of the scorecard. Why? Because we were supposed to call the clubhouse on the 8th hole so that they could get some food ready for us. Unfortunately, the clubhouse's number was obscured by a picture of Charlie Brown, and the only number visible, was the a sponsor of the club. Ahh, what I would have given to be a fly on the wall Monday morning at that insurance office when they went through their messages.

-"That way, it spreads the skin out a bit more, so more guys can get a piece of the action."

So that's about it. Enjoy the pics, laugh at the vids, and don't forget to kick yourself in the ass for not being able to go this year. I'll hopefully see most of you guys next year, for the 10th October Classic!! That's right, we'll be celebrating a decade(nce) of brown!

See you on the motherfuckin' 5th of October, 2015.

Until then, stay brown my brothers..
